Drop-Step Fundamentals Outfield Drill

Focused drop-step teaching progression that eliminates false steps and trains outfielders to open correctly and explode to the ball.

Duration:
About 8 min

Coaching notes

Players practice pure drop-steps to both sides and straight back, using cones or visual cues, then progress to tracking actual fly balls while maintaining the same first-step mechanics.

Objectives

Install a consistent, explosive drop-step; remove false steps; improve range and confidence going back on the ball.

Coaching cues

Sink the hips, open the hip, first step creates the angle; no false step; stay in the legs; eyes find the ball after the first step.

Common errors

False preparatory step; standing up; opening the wrong hip; looking for the ball before moving the feet.

Steps

  1. 1. Player in ready position; coach calls direction.
  2. 2. Execute clean drop-step (sink, open, explode) without a false step.
  3. 3. Progress to tracking a fly ball after the drop-step.
  4. 4. Catch and transition into throwing position.
